Strengthening Land Governance: Capacity‐Building Seminar for Traditional Chiefs in Cameroon
Undenianly, Land and property rights remain at the heart of economic development, social stability and environmental sustainability in Cameroon today. In that light, a robust legal framework for State property and land tenure is essential for resolving longstanding conflicts, ensuring equitable access to land, and integrating customary authority into formal governance systems.
It is within that context, that the Government of Cameroon, under the chairmanship of the Minister of State Property, Surveys and Land Tenure - Henri Eyebe Ayissi, in collaboration with partners such as FAO, GIZ, and civil society organizations, has embarked on a process to develop a National Land Tenure and State Property Policy Document. A critical component of this process is engaging traditional chiefs—whose roles in land allocation, dispute resolution, customary tenure, and community leadership are deeply rooted and influential. The recent capacity‐building seminar for traditional chiefs which took place in the East region of Cameroon from the 15th to 16th September,2025 at the Sembe Lecco in Bertoua, aims to equip them with knowledge, tools, and a platform to contribute effectively to the reform process in Cameroon .
Chaired by the Governor of the East region, Grégoire Mvongo, this Capacity-building seminar for traditional chiefs, brought together traditional rulers ,who came from the 10 regions of the country to gain knowledge on land management in Cameroon and later contribute in making the State Property and Land Tenure policy document good enough, to adapt to the reality of their context.
After two days of brainstorming, the seminar came to an end with participants going home thankful and, satisfied.
